The London Architecture Foundation Roadshow was a pioneering model of grass roots public participation and integrated strategic urban planning.

Fluid’s role was to produce a broad issue-based strategy for the NDC area, including project scenarios.

Following the initial Roadshow process Fluid was commissioned to extend the process to the entire New Deal area. The result was an intense and creative community involvement process and a Delivery Plan which captured the aspirations and ideas of local people in a fundamental series of changes to their neighbourhood.

At the heart of all the development work was the leadership of local people and the commitment to ensure that residents actively engaged in exploring both issues and solutions.

Innovative and interesting ways of engaging local people and getting them to talk about the issues in their area were used to draw out information that was turned into scenarios that could be further discussed and debated.

The timetable of events included action planning, young people’s workshops, documenting the area, a mobile video booth, design festivals and fun days.

The outcome was a multi layered proposal that included community facilities, new types of living, public realm improvements, space for recreation and improved connections, infrastructure, employment opportunities, learning resources for the whole community, healthy living, and safer neighbourhoods.
