Fluid was appointed by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in 2010, to explore the potential development opportunities for a prominent and strategic site on the corner of Vallance Road and Whitechapel Road; comprising historic buildings and dilapidated structures.
Design responses explored viable options which would create a new marker and bookend for Whitechapel market, strengthen the urban form, make new pedestrian connections, improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, consider public realm adaptations to ease congestion related to Crossrail and re-provide and improve the existing retail offer.
The approach was highly contextual responding to the areas rich architectural styles, cultures, local communities and visitors. A preferred approach was selected from 3 options, guided by viability, good urban form and the constraints of the site.
