David Wilson Homes Southern and their partners the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) commissioned this housing masterplan for the development of land to the north of the former Park Prewett Hospital site in north Basingstoke, Hampshire, to deliver up to 600 new homes. Outline planning consent was granted in December 2013.
Inspired by this unique sloping and treed site, the surrounding rural landscape, and a range of local vernaculars – the masterplan sets out a ‘contemporary rural’ architectural language within a landscape driven approach.
The design has been developed in close consultation with the local community, learning lessons from other recent developments and responding to local sensitivities and aspirations – in particular the safeguarding of access to the Spinney – an historic belt of mature Beach trees that edge the site.
The plan will deliver predominantly two-storey housing in a series of character areas.
This is complemented by a number high quality and carefully detailed apartment blocks which are arranged in higher density areas to define unique places and zones of transition from land that has already been developed through to the smaller houses and out to the open countryside beyond.
The South East Design Review Panel in September 2012 indicated strong support for the scheme and its strategic moves stating – ‘[there is] a genuine effort to raise the standard of design, with a view to creating a distinctive new place’.
Fluid is currently developing the Reserved Matters application and detailed designs for an Autumn 2014 submission. As part of this Fluid will develop a number of new housing types for David Wilson Homes Southern.
