A new assembly hall for Maryland School enables the junior school to hold large assemblies and school plays as well as community and social events to help meet the school’s wider aspirations.
Following the successful completion of the Maryland Childrens’ Centre in 2009, Fluid was appointed for full architectural services to deliver the new Hall which was also to provide a new welcoming ‘face’ to those entering the school from Buxton Road, adjacent the new Childrens’ Centre.
The expanded Hall is created through its extension into a courtyard area, and by linking the existing junior and infant halls providing a flexible and user controllable multi-functional space using moveable acoustic walls.
The new extension can be broken down into a series of elements and components which slot into the existing fabric of the school with minimum disruption.
The elements include: roof, rooflights, windcatchers, suspended structure, glazed façade and entrance canopy. The façade is made of graded coloured glass maximizing daylight and creating a jewel like appearance.
